Monroe County Schools Awards GEMS to Community Foundation

The Monroe County School District recently awarded its distinguished Community Partner Great Educational Moments for Students (GEMS) Award to the Community Foundation in appreciation of its continued support of education and helping students in need.

CFFK has awarded grants over the past 25 years to the K-8 public schools Keys-wide, including more than $1 million in student and teacher awards and scholarships in the past decade alone. The very first Community Foundation funds opened in 1997 were for scholarships. Since then, CFFK has funded over 250 scholarships for Key West students.

Following Hurricane Irma, CFFK granted over $136,000 for school supplies, food, direct support to families and teachers who had lost their homes, and for facility repairs. Several funds at CFFK support teachers and education opportunities, including the David Wolkowsky Teachers of Merit Awards Fund, the Phyllis Allen Teacher Recruitment Fund, and the Harry and Linda Bryant Fund.

Most recently, we provided funding to seven MCSD schools to help families dealing with the economic effects of COVID-19. which provided food, clothing, supplies, and other aid for young students at risk.
