CFFK Partners Support Ten Future Student Leaders

Individuals, families and businesses are helping advance educational opportunities for our community’s youth. This month, CFFK donors awarded nearly $40,000 to 10 deserving Key West High School students through scholarships to continue their education and awards in recognition of their academic or artistic achievements. Floy V. Thompson Community Awareness Scholarship — $20,000 scholarship to Firdavs Yuldashev. The Scholarship was established in 1992 to encourage the recipient to develop wisdom, leadership, and concern for others that will lead to future participation in community affairs in Key West or elsewhere.

Fred R. Cabanas Aviation Memorial Scholarship — $500 to Raylyn Faatuai. The Scholarship was established in 2013 to honor Fred’s memory and extraordinary gift of flying, and is awarded to a deserving graduate of KWHS pursuing a career in aviation, including airplane mechanics, control tower management, piloting, etc.

Andrea Staci Carbonell Scholarship — $500 to Kara Haughey. The Scholarship was established by the estate of Ygnacio “Iggy” Thomas Carbonell in remembrance of his daughter, Andrea, in 2014 to recognize a KWHS graduating senior who has demonstrated a strong desire to pursue an education in the medical and health care professions.

First State Bank Diego L. Caso Scholarship — $1,000 scholarship to Fernandez Cardenas. The Scholarship was established in 2005 to recognize a KWHS graduating senior who has demonstrated a strong desire to pursue a degree in Business or another discipline that could lead to a banking career.

Boyd and Elsie Hamilton Family Scholarship Award — $3,000 award to Valedictorian Brian Coward and $2,000 award to Salutatorian Tristin Blackwell. The Fund was established in 1992 to encourage the recipients to develop wisdom, leadership, and concern for others.

Boyd’s Key West Campground Scholarship Award — $1,000 award to Anoom Yasmin. The award is from the Hamilton Family Scholarship Fund, established in 1992, and is for academic achievement.

Jeff MacNelly Memorial Scholarship Award — $15,000 total award to Hanna Antonides (winner of the 2015, 2016 and 2017 MacNelly Scholarship). The award is to a Monroe County high school student with artistic ability and interest in creating political cartoons. MacNelly was a three-time Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist and long-time Keys resident. The scholarship fund, established in 2003 at CFFK, is his legacy.

G. Ross McKee Jr. Scholarship — $5,000 scholarship to Melanie Alvarez Velazquez. The Scholarship was established in 2004 to assist a graduating senior who demonstrates a strong desire to obtain a college degree, diligently works to achieve it, and requires financial assistance to reach it.

Franko Richmond Music Scholarship — $500 scholarship to Jason Sonnenfeld. The Fund was established in 2010 to provide scholarship support to a KWHS graduating senior seeking to pursue the study of music, specifically piano, at a college or other institution of higher learning. Franko Richmond was a pianist, composer, teacher, and performer in Key West who passed away in 2009.
