And The Winners Are… Donors Support Future Student Leaders

Community Foundation donors awarded $33,500 to nine deserving Key West High School graduating seniors through scholarships to continue their education and awards in recognition of their academic or artistic achievements. Congratulations to the following 2016 recipients:

Floy V. Thompson Community Awareness Scholarship — $20,000 scholarship to Sydney Hamilton. The Scholarship was established in 1992 to encourage the recipient to develop wisdom, leadership, and concern for others that will lead to future participation in community affairs in Key West or elsewhere.

First State Bank Diego L. Caso Scholarship — $1,000 scholarship to Kevin Cheng. The Scholarship was established in 2005 to recognize a KWHS graduating senior who has demonstrated a strong desire to pursue a degree in Business or another discipline that could lead to a banking career.

Ross McKee Jr. Scholarship — $5,000 scholarship to Olivia Maliki. The Scholarship was established in 2004 to assist a graduating senior who demonstrates a strong desire to obtain a college degree and diligently works to achieve it.

Franko Richmond Music Scholarship — $500 scholarship to Martin Schoneck. The Fund was established in 2010 to provide scholarship support to a KWHS graduating senior seeking to pursue the study of music, specifically piano, at a college or other institution of higher learning. Franko Richmond was a pianist, composer, teacher, and performer in Key West who passed away in 2009.

Hamilton Family Scholarship Award — $3,000 award to Valedictorian Jesse Cheung and $2,000 award to Salutatorian Kevin Coward. The Fund was established in 1992 to encourage the recipients to develop wisdom, leadership, and concern for others.

Boyd’s Key West Campground Scholarship Award — $1,000 award to Shiloh McPherson. The award is from the Hamilton Family Scholarship Fund, established in 1992, and is for academic achievement.

Fred R. Cabanas Aviation Memorial Scholarship — $500 award to Robert “Kip” Keiver. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate pursuing a career in aviation. The fund was established in 2013 to honor Fred’s memory and his extraordinary gift of flying.

Andrea Staci Carbonnell Scholarship — $500 award to Brianna Willett. The award was established in 2014 to recognize a graduate who demonstrates a strong desire to pursue a career in the medical and health care profession.
