And The Winners Are… CFFK Donors Support Future Student Leaders

CFFK donors awarded $38,500 to nine deserving Key West High School students through scholarships to continue their education and awards in recognition of their academic or artistic achievements. Congratulations to the following 2015 recipients:

Floy V. Thompson Community Awareness Scholarship — $20,000 scholarship to Alexandria Lichtl. The Scholarship was established in 1992 to encourage the recipient to develop wisdom, leadership, and concern for others that will lead to future participation in community affairs in Key West or elsewhere.

First State Bank Diego L. Caso Scholarship — $1,000 scholarship to Volodymyr Dobrotov. The Scholarship was established in 2005 to recognize a KWHS graduating senior who has demonstrated a strong desire to pursue a degree in Business or another discipline that could lead to a banking career.

G. Ross McKee Jr. Scholarship — $5,000 scholarship to Meagan Harmon. The Scholarship was established in 2004 to assist a graduating senior who demonstrates a strong desire to obtain a college degree, diligently works to achieve it, and requires financial assistance to reach it.

Franko Richmond Music Scholarship — $500 scholarship to Liza Jane Catana The Fund was established in 2010 to provide scholarship support to a KWHS graduating senior seeking to pursue the study of music, specifically piano, at a college or other institution of higher learning. Franko was a pianist, composer, teacher, and performer in Key West who passed away in 2009.

Boyd and Elsie Hamilton Family Scholarship Award — $3,000 award to Valedictorian Elena Guzman and $2,000 award to Salutatorian Anthony Ohayon. The Fund was established in 1992 to encourage the recipients to develop wisdom, leadership, and concern for others.

Boyd’s Key West Campground Scholarship Award — $1,000 award to Michael Stern. The award is from the Hamilton Family Scholarship Fund, established in 1992, and is for academic achievement.

Jean Olson Memorial Scholarship — $1,000 award to Samuel Fuller. The award is the first from the Jean Olson Memorial Scholarship at CFFK, established last year to honor long-time Keys resident Jean Olson, herself a singer and supporter of many KW performing arts organizations. The scholarship was awarded in the week of what would have been Jean’s 89th birthday. Sammy plays marimba and quad drums and is planning to enter the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in the Fall to continue studies in music performance and engineering.

Jeff MacNelly Memorial Scholarship Award — $5,000 award to Hanna Antonides. The award is to a Monroe County high school student with artistic ability and interest in creating political cartoons. MacNelly was a three-time Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist and long-time Keys resident. The scholarship fund, established in 2003 at CFFK, is his legacy. Hanna will use the award toward art school when she graduates from Key West High School in 2017.
